Welcome to the most important website in the world
I initially wanted to start this with “This wasn’t where I was supposed to be,” but then I realized that was a stupid intro for any number of reasons … primarily because it implies that I do know where I was supposed to be, and holy goodness do I not.
My whole life has been a series of stumbling into things. I stumbled into wanting to do sports journalism because my father wrote about baseball. I stumbled into my first newspaper job because a friend worked there, my second because a friend lived in that town, my third because the friend from the first newspaper now worked at a different newspaper and got me yet another job. Heck, I stumbled into my first restaurant job because one of the servers was an intern for my mom and hooked me up.
I started in fantasy sports not because it was a long-term goal of mine, but because I had been fired from a different restaurant, saw a tweet that a fantasy baseball site (that I didn’t even know existed) wanted to add writers and I was bored. That grew to writing there, which grew to writing football for a bigger site (never mind the fact that at the time I didn’t know much about fantasy football, I wasn’t in a position to say no — fake it ‘til you make it), which grew to a full-time job at PFF, the first job in my life I’ve actively pursued and gotten just because it made sense for a career.

And of course, that ended poorly, with the news that my position is no longer needed with the company as of February (I could go into some serious depth here, but it’s probably not worth it). So maybe the actual point is that I finally am where I’m supposed to be, because “floating around directionlessly” appears to be the one thing I’m best at.
Regardless, this is where I am. I lost my job at PFF, lost my outlet for writing. So I’m writing here, and I’m hoping writing here turns out to be a profitable venture. I’m not expecting this to replace a real job (yet? Hope springs eternal), but I want to write what I want to write, and where else can I write what I want to write than somewhere with my literal name as its URL?
I’ll still be writing fantasy football, for those of you who like my fantasy football writing. I’ll still be writing about zombies, for those of you who like my zombie writing (and stay tuned for more books!). I’ll also be writing about parenting, and movies, and TV, and … whatever else I feel like writing about. The goal here is to be as diverse as I’m capable of being. I’ll also be podcasting just as soon as I understand technology enough to make that happen.
But I can’t do it for free. If you like what I write, or just like me, or just have a few extra bucks you feel like wasting, click my Patreon link and toss me a few bucks. I totally understand if you don’t, but I totally understand even more if you do. And there will be contributor-exclusive content! Just as soon as I find something people care about! (Kidding, I have some ideas.)
In the end, I don’t know where I was supposed to be at 36, because I don’t know where I was supposed to be at 18, or at 22, or at 27, or at 32. But here is where I find myself, and with a little luck and helpfulness from people who read my work (or just my mom), maybe I can find myself here for a while. Maybe it will turn out that this is exactly where I was supposed to be.
